Increasing your calorie intake is the key! Exercise just puts that extra calories to its proper place. If you burn more than you consume, gaining weight will be kinda tough? Diet is the most important part of any health regime - avoid fat, eat proteins and fiber. If you workout to exhaustion and do not compensate for the lost cals you're in trouble. And hey, doing bench press all alone is not a very good idea I guess, get a gym partner who matches your body type and capabilities :)
